Sir

We a committee in behalf of the Philamathesian Soc. Have been instructed to inform you that said Soc. Have no in contemplation the publishing of a monthly magazine. The benefit of which would accrue to the Society from the issuing of a periodical of that standing which we are determined ours shall attain are numerous – It is amply sufficient to state that by it we can aquire that name and character abroad which as a literary society we justly merit – we can increase our already respectable library to one much more valuable and extensive – we infuse into the individual members a laudable and generous ambition – we can connect ourselves to our honorary and graduate members by a much closer tie – we can create an unity of feeling between the faculty and students which will tend not only to the prosperity of our Society but to that of the Institution with which it is connected – we can if the undertaking proves us prosperous as we anticipate, add at least $500 anuly to our society fund and through our exchange papers, we can establish a reading room free of cost which otherwise would be a yearly expense of $300 – Our facilities for obtaining subscribers to our magazine are so great that little fear is entertained but that our subscription list will be amply large – There are Philomathesians in almost every town, city and College in the eastern, northern and western States, who are ready to act as agents for our publication We have carefully counted the cost and find that a monthly magazine containing fifty pages and supported by 6000 subscribers at 200 a year will be a money making concern – We have consulted the members of faculty individually and have found them quite anxious for the success of our undertaking – We have the promise if our periodical is commenced under favorable auspices of not only their good wishes but also their contributions – We however to not feel safe in commensing our magazine without a greater number of pledged contributors – We know full well the danger and folly of relying upon the unpledged contributors and therefore knowing your love and affection for our Society – your desire for its prosperity your friendship for its members and above all your former high standing as one of its members and also placing unbound confidence in your tallents and attainments, we earnestly ask of you a strong and helping hand – The great benefit you have derived from a connection with our Society and the name of a Philomathesian which you will carry with you wherever you go are so many inducements for your acquiescence to our request – We are determined that our periodical shall rank so high as Western facilities and Western tallents can make it – We expect to number among our contributors Bishop McIlvaine, Dr Sparrow and Coltin Professor Kendrick. Wing. Mencheur, Dyer, and Stevenson. Pres – McGuffey, Mansfield, Ingraham, Ruth, and others – You will readily perceive that the undertaking is commenced under no unfavorable auspices and that it demands the hearty cooperation of all, who take an interest in the prosperity of our society – Believing that you do take such an interest in our Society – we hope soon to receive a favorable answer to our request and remain
