Friend Buckingham
I have waited very impatiently for the last 8 or 10 weeks to receive a letter from you in answer to mine – but in vain – I conclude you have either determined not to write at all or that you have written and the letter has miscarried – If the last is the case write my dear fellow – Write at once – at least let me know whether you recd mine – There was an enclosure in it which perhaps some of Kendall’s “herelings” have taken for oyster suppers – But to business – This prospectus we wish you to use if you are willing and see how many good subscribers you can obtain in Hudson – Try for the sake of the old Philo’s – You have recd the letter from the Committee stating who we have as contributors outside of the Soc walls and from that you will see there is no danger of failing – Surely such names as Bishop McIlvaine, Dr Sparrow Prest. McGuffie Dr Colton Professors Wing, Kendrick, Stevenson and a host of others will be sufficient to obtain a respectable number of subscribers – If we get 500 names (responsible ones) we shall start it – Prof Kendrick is to be at the head of the Editorial board assisted by a Committee from the Soc – The principal business of the Committee however as such will be in the way of business All control of the literary affairs will be in the hands of Prof Kendrick – Among the faculty at the W. R. C., among the students perhaps if you are willing to try among the inhabitants of the town. Altogether we ought even in the present hard times to obtain a good list – Do not however get any names but those you think are good - Please let us know as soon as possible in order that we may determine rightly at starting – Do not forget it is for it is for the old loved and honored Philomathesian Soc. – By the way the A. T. K’s are as jealous as ever – They watch our every step but dare not appear otherwise than civil – I will give you particulars when I write again – that is if I receive an answer – Your friends here are all well – They often ask of me about you but of course I can only say I don’t know – The magazine committee of the Philos are at present Hale, Buttler, Andrews & Taylor
Hoping to receive an answer to the private part of this letter next week –
I remain Yours
Sincerely
Luc G Peck
You can of course wafer a long sheet of paper to the bottom of the prospectus for the Subscribers names
