Dear Wife:
Cousin Jonathan Chases’s son David, a most agreeable young man about 19 years of age brought me to this place in his father’s Chaise. I found my dear Neice [sic], Onde Ruth Childs, now the widow of my cousin March Chase with her numerous family in good health.
Her son Samuel Chase is the Bearer of this letter. He goes to Ohio in order to enter our school and to finish his education in Kenyon College. Let him be recd. as a worthy & beloved member of our family and take his [stand] in the school according to his merit. He will bring a years Board & tuition with him for which you will give him credit. Perhaps one or more students from Cornish & Royalton may accompany Saml. If they go not with him four or five may come in the spring. Finding that the coach did not go [to] Hopkinton this day I accompanied the Rev. Carlton Chase to his church & preached at Bellows falls. I calld [sic] on your cousin Mrs. Tucker. She made out to own her relationship to you but treated me very coldly. I saw Mrs. Philips and some other of my Hartford friends. & rode back with my [?] and it is very late: but I can not conclude without telling what you know that I am your faithful husb. P Chase
Mrs. Chase our dear [?] sends her best love to you and dear Lucia.
