Dearest Brother

I have been waiting for some time past to get news enough on hand out of which to manufacture a letter to you worthy of perusal: and now that I can send you the annexed “plan” and the accompanying pamphlet containing the account of the laying of the cornerstone of the Chapel & school house of Jubilee College I am sure you will not begrudge your pains in reading the contents of my Epistle.

What gives additional interest to the subject is that the building is rising fast into eminence. The walls are all up to the windows [?] these are in their places and [one] accumulating round them.

I have had to bring all my [?] lumber floors, doors, windows, sash & see from Pitsburg [sic] and I have just now paid $700 for freight only of a S.Boat load.

But my cash is now all gone - and so I have to my old work begging. Don’t frown at this. For you are the donor of what I now in part dedicate to the complete this college if worst comes to worst. You’ll see my Wife & Daughter & my grand Daughter & her mother soon at your dwelling - I hope they will not stay long enough to make you twice glad - Do write to your loving Brother Philander
