Description

Papyrus half-columns in the funerary complex of King Zoser at Saqqara (see B05.001 for main image and description). These belong to just one of the multiple types of columns that ancient Egyptian builders developed by using natural forms to adorn vertical supports. Other types of columns include palm, papyrus-bundle, lotus, "Tent pole" and papyrus columns with open bud. -MA (Source: Marvin Trachtenberg and Isabelle Hyman, Architecture, from Prehistory to post-Modernism: The Western Tradition (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1986), 65)
