Description
A wide view of the magnificent Parthenon, the "sublime creation of High Classic Doric architecture" (Trachtenberg, 88). The building, dominating the Acropolis from its highest point, was erected between 447 and 438 B.C., and was designed by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates. Its plan type is octastyle peripteral, with seventeen columns on its sides. -MA (Source: Trachtenberg and Hyman, Architecture, from prehistory to post-modernism: the western tradition, 1986)
