Abstract

The detailed entrance facade of Hatuniye Medresseh.

Description

The Hatuniye Medresseh, erected by the Ottoman Princess Nefise Hatun. Medressehs were schools or colleges primarily for the study of the Islamic sciences, even though secular disciplines were taught as well. Pictured is the monumental entrance to the prayer hall. Unlike some of the more famous portal entrances of medreses in Turkey, the decoration here is not extensive, although delicate calligraphic and arabesque tracery does adorn part of the facade above the door. The building itself is made of local ashlar stone and the portal is made of imported cut marble.
