Abstract
A view of the Dome of the Rock, the earliest surviving Islamic monument, dating from the late 7th century AD.
Description
A closer view of the Dome of the Rock. In structure the building resembles centrally planned buildings known as martyria of Late Antiquity. Structurally the building is annular, with a cylindrical core capped by a gilded dome which was initially built out of wood. This core is set over the rock and the whole is surrounded by a double octagon.According to Oleg Grabar, the earliest standing building whose composition and impact are comparable to the Dome of the Rock is the Santa Constanza church. Another famous building that is of the same type is San Vitale in Ravenna.
