Description

123- A close view of the mihrab at the mosque of Cordoba, added by the caliph al-Hakam II. The horseshoe arch that encapsulates the mihrab proper is richly decorated with mosaic decoration, and is surrounded by an alfiz (a decorated rectangular panel which encloses the outward side of an arch). The voussoirs of the horseshoe arch are faced with gold mosaic depicting arabesque patterns on multi-colored backgrounds. Bands of Kufic script in gold frame the arch and spandrels. The mosaics are of a Byzantine character, and may well have been worked out by a Byzantine mosaicist. For a general account of the mosque of Cordoba, see B 49.111,112. - SK
