Abstract

View of a retaining wall in front of the Temenos of Heroes, in the Sanctuary of Athena. The wall features isodomic ashlar masonry, characterized by uniform rectangular blocks. It also has rustication, or carved texture on the stones.

Description

The retaining wall in front of the Temenos of Heroes in the northeast corner of the Sanctuary of Athena. In typical classical greek fashion, the wall is constructed without mortar and features isodomic ashlar masonry, characterized by the use of finely cut rectangular blocks of uniform height. The blocks are also rusticated, seen in the carved decoration of the stones. Ashlar construction is found in Bronze Age Minoan sites (DL) such as Knossos, ca. 1700 BCE, but made a resurgence during the Geometric Period from 900-700 BCE and is used extensively afterward.
