View of the staircase leading up from the terrace of the Temple of Apollo to the Theater. This staircase sits directly next to the monument of Krateros, and they were likely built together between 323 and 320 BCE.
Description
A staircase next to the Monument of Krateros, leading up from the terrace of the Temple of Apollo to the Theater. The Monument of Krateros dates from between 323 and 320 BCE, making Baly's description of "4th century BC staircase" an accurate one. The Monument of Krateros was a collection of bronze statues engaged in a hunt, depicting Krateros alongside Alexander the Great in an event thought to have actually occured in 332 BCE. None of the statues from the group survive, only the stone platform to the right of the staircase, holding the statue bases and dedicatory inscriptions. The monument is later termed by Baly "Alexander's Lion Hunt" in his notes for DH.69.
