Abstract
The start of the Sacred Way seen from the East. The Sacred Way was a path leading through the Sanctuary of Apollo, along which city-states presented votive monuments and treasuries to showcase their religious devotion and wealth.
Description
A view of the start of the Sacred Way from the Siphnian Treasury. The Sacred Way is the path leading through the Sanctuary of Apollo, lined by treasuries and votive monuments erected by various city-states to showcase their religious devotion, wealth, and culture. In the bottom right of the image we see some of the Sicyonian Treasury, a Doric style structure dating from the 5th century BCE. Below this foundation were discovered two earlier 6th century buildings, believed to be given by Cleisthenes of Sikyon, winner of the chariot race in the Pythian games of 582. In the center of the image, the twin semicircular Argive Exedrae lie to both sides of the path. The one to the South (right) was built around 450 BCE in honor of the Epigonoi, and the one to the North (left) was known as the "Kings of Argos," holding statues of various Argive kings and heroes. This was a slightly later construction, dating to the 4th century.
