Abstract
View looking out from the Roman Marketplace towards the slopes of Hyampeia. The marketplace sat just outside the wall marking the Sanctuary of Apollo and sold votive offerings to pilgrims.
Description
View from within the portico of the Roman Marketplace, or Agora, facing east towards the slopes of Hyampeia. Situated just outside the Sanctuary of Apollo, this location was originally a Greek agora, before being extensively renovated by the Romans, who added a stoa, or covered portico supported by the columns pictured here. The columns and stoa date from the 4th century CE, and were re-erected in 1977 shortly before Baly's visit. Since, all of the surviving column capitals have been broken or removed.
