Abstract

Some olive trees growing around Delphi. Olive trees have been cultivated around the site of Delphi for millenia, and it remains one of the most olive dense areas in Greece.

Description

Twin Olive trees growing around Delphi, very likely within or near the Sanctuary of Athena. Olive trees have been cultivated in this region for millennia, and played an important role in many aspects of ancient greek life, being used for food, hygeine, and religious rites. Olive trees were also a symbol of Athena, who gave the olive to the greeks in a mythological contest for Athens' favor. Still today the nearby olive groves of Amphissa surround the site of Delphi, covering around 55,000 acres and containing over a million trees, most over 150 years old.
