Creator Biography

Maurice Mauris, French, 1852–1898 (illustrator).

Description

La Semaine De L'Affaire or The Week of the Affair depicts eleven vignettes of people discussing l'affaire with each containing a newspaper in various states of reading and abandonment whose front page headlines "L'AFFAiRE!".

The print references the Dreyfus affair, which took place between 1894 and 1906 and revolved around the debate of whether or not Alfred Dreyfus, a French military officer who allegedly sold military secrets to the Germans, was guilty of the treason for which he was convicted.

According to Professor Sarah Blick, the print comes from a 19th-century humor magazine making fun of the title of the Dreyfus Affair, and people being confused by that word and it's salacious double meaning. The Dreyfus Affair was something her father (Boris Blick) was deeply interested in and affected by.
