Creator Biography

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, French, 1841–1919 (etcher).

Description

The etching depicts Renoir's grandson, Claude Renoir (1913–1993), in, as "de trois-quarts à droite" translates from French, "three-quarter pose." Renoir layers visible strokes to create loosely rendered features.

It is reported that etcher Victor-Joseph Roux-Champion (1871–1953) first owned the plates for this print before they were acquired by Edmond Sagot (1857–1917) and/or his son-in-law Maurice Le Garrec (1881–1937), print publishers and dealers in Paris. According to conflicting information given to Joseph G. Stella from 1970s Sagot-Le Garrec gallery, several unnumbered impressions were created. In this case, their publisher's mark could potentially be on the back of this print (Delteil, 1999: 34). Details on Sagot-Le Garrec’s stamps can be found in Frits Lugt’s “Les marques de collections de dessins & d’estampes” (Lugt 2253 and 2254).
