John G. Charlton, English, ca. 1893–1920s (photographer and publisher).

Description

View of Canterbury Cathedral. The nave and beginnings of the transept are shown from the somewhat-overgrown gardens. The pointed-arch arcade and tall crossing tower are the focus of the composition.

J. G. Charlton, Cathedral Studios initially worked out of 54 St. George’s Street before he moved in the early 1900s to 14, Mercery Lane, Canterbury, where this photograph was published. Charlton likely served as the official photographer of Canterbury Cathedral, but also did portrait photography, reproductions of William Blake and Thomas Stothard's popular prints of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and souvenirs of Canterbury.
