Description
A man, identifiable as a Doge of Venice by his ermine robes and the peaked hat, a corona ducal, he wears, looks leftward out of the frame. His brow is furrowed and his lips pressed together with shadows accentuating the creases in his face. A dark background contrasts with the white of his fur robes and the deep red of the robes underneath them and his cap.
This painting's late 16th century date suggested by the dealer may not be accurate. Looking at images of 16th century doges, this doge's complete lack of facial hair suggests he is either Leonardo Loredan (1436–1521, doge 1501–1521) or Antonio Grimani (1434–1523, doge 1521–1523).
