Description
A view of the galleries of Bab al-Qattanin or the Cotton Merchant’s Gate, one of the grandest gates of the Haram Sharif, located in the western wall. The gate leads into the Cotton Merchant’s Market (Suq al-Qattanin), which was built by the Mamluk al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century, and which according to K.A.C Creswell was the finest bazaar in Syria. The entrance portal (not visible in this image) is located within a much larger deeply recessed portal containing impressive muqarnas or stalactite decoration and outlined by an arch with alternating red and white ablaq masonry.
