Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canaletto), Italian, born in Venice, Italy, 1697-1768.
Scene of Padua circa 1740. A wide street with water at each edge is populated with merchants, workers, pedestrians, and carriages. On the left edge of the water, a boat approaches a bridge supported by a series of rounded arches; in the water to the right, several boats approach the dock. Across the bridge lies the city of Padua, with a skyline marked by bell towers, church domes, and tall, ancient monuments.
