Creator Biography

Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canaletto), Italian, 1697–1768 (etcher).

Description

A wide street with water at each edge is populated with merchants, workers, pedestrians, and carriages. On the left edge of the water, a boat approaches a bridge supported by a series of rounded arches; in the water to the right, several boats approach the dock. Across the bridge lies the city of Padua, with a skyline marked by bell towers, church domes, and tall, ancient monuments.

This etching is one of 36 created for Vedute Altre prese da i Luoghi Altre ideate (Views, Some Taken from Places, Others Invented) depicting Venice, Canaletto's home and constant source of artistic inspiration.
