Engraving of a man shown in profile holding a small book to his chest. The description under the image reads, "Died April 4th, 1771, Oliver Goldsmith, author of 'The Vicar of Wakefield,' & c; but more eminent as a poet, by 'The Deserted Village,' and 'The Traveller,' poems of extraordinary merit. Goldsmith was born at Roscommon in Ireland, or, according to some authorities, at Ferns, or, as others say, at Elphin, Nov. 29 1728.The simplicity of his character, the integrity of his heart, and the merit of his productions made his company acceptable to the better sort."
