Description

The College literary society splits into the Philomathesian and Nu Pi Kappa societies due to regional tensions about slavery. Philomathesian becomes the "Northern" society and Nu Pi Kappa the "Southern." Literary societies on campus were a centerpiece of college social life in the early years of the College. The Philomathesian and Nu Pi Kappa societies created the first secular libraries on campus.
