Description
Within the installation, “A series of six builders' hods was suspended casually from a line of nails in the wall. Each hod was different, unique, as if lovingly banged into shape by its former owner. Emanating from each was a potent perfume that entirely suffused the room, and caused most visitors to cover their mouths as they approached the wall. What tempted them was the fluorescent glow of bright pink and equally bright white pools of some opaque, soapy substance that each hod contained, most to the point of brimming over...The reference to St. Teresa was only in part related to her sainthood, more to the perpetual conflict she endured between secular and convent life in her struggle to attain enlightenment and peace.” (Smith, Karen. Comment by Karen Smith. Wang Gongxin & Lin Tianmiao website.) (Russ, Hannah '18)
