Description
Around two hundred ropes and bamboo sticks hang loosely from the ceiling of the gallery in the Open Culture Center in Linz, Austria. These ropes are divided into individual sections every half meter, on which translucent and square-shaped rice papers hang. According to Johanna Hofleitner, the artist’s design of paper windows is a sign of remembrance, they are not only reminiscent of Chinese windows which were made from rice paper in pre-modern times, but also recalling Chinese hanging scrolls of painting or theatre curtains as they swing in the room when visitors pass by. Moreover, this work addresses Qin’s encounter between the West and the East, expressing the longing for her homeland after leaving China with her husband in 1986.
