Description
The “Heavenly Dog” is a sculpture created from 1988 to 1993, after he emigrated to Austria. This is a highly abstracted sculpture. The title “Heavenly Dog” refers to the supernatural being in both Chinese and Japanese folklore, which has multiple iconography and representation. It was traditionally depicted with human, monkey, and avian characteristics in Japanese culture and it is a dangerous and anthropophagous canine monster representing a shooting star or comet in Chinese culture. Although the piece highly abstract, Its vibrant lines encapsulate the most characteristic features of a dog craning its neck to the sky. (Zhuocheng Jiang ‘26)
