Smith and Wife Anxious To Get The Kaiser's Scalp Local Colored Registrant Waives Deferred Classification To Enter Army
James G. Smith, colored registrant, has a grudge against Germany not for any thing that Huns ever did to him more than they have to all the rest of world--just a "general cussedness" grudge--and this explains why James G. Smith will go to Camp Sherman next month with the Knox county contingent of colored men, for Smith is in Class 4 under the selective service law. On Thursday, however, Smith and his wife appeared before the local board and inquired if he would be permitted to go at this time. Being answered in the affirmative, Smith requested that he be put on the list and his wife smilingly signed the papers necessary to permit her husband to enter the fighting forces of Uncle Sam.
