Abstract

This project takes shape as a hybrid, built of creative and critical analysis of changes brewing in the genre of memoir — how fragmentation takes the forefront as a distrust of narrative and rebellion against traditional memoir and historical writing of people from marginalized communities. As a queer, Hispanic woman I subscribe to the beliefs and practices of memoirists in this current age, of using fragmented writing styles and contesting truth-telling in nonfiction writing, and that it is imperative to study and emulate these emerging creative nonfiction practices in order to continue its legacy. The aim of this project is to further my understanding and analysis of these changes in literary practices from the works consulted, while continuing to push the boundaries of memoir in my creative practice through pieces that can be further developed into their own texts.
