Lafayette Ina. July 4th

Very Dear Nephew.

I wrote you last at Mr. Robt. Wilson’s at whose house I staid the first night but one after leaving you and the rest of our dear friends in Springfield -- My journey since has been like the path thro’ [life] in part pleasant - in part indifferent - and oft times very dangerous. - To tell you the whole would tire both you and me. I shall however never forget the Okehaw; it’s deep stream widespread through the trees - its [rising] bottom - the sticking fast of Poor Sol’s feet and the breaking loose of fair Ellen’s end of the double tree - and my own most miraculous escape by - after this mercy I staid Dorus’s next morning rode 17 miles [across] a wide prairie - breakfasted at [Moma’s] - that night arrived after riding 26 miles more, at Danville - A large Congregation being collected I performed service & preached a sermon - Next morning met several gentlemen at my lodgings - Parochial association read and agreed to - & left for signature. -

At Ten departed for William’s Port 26 - miles where I staid last night - crossed the wabash & got my [horse] [?] at [Atica] - & came to this place as the “people All” were leaving the fourth of July & going home I fear none the better for their mode of testifying their patriotism.

Many persons here have already called on me: & I shall (D:v) preach tomorrow. -

You [see] by this how much reason I have to be -- truly thankful - Don’t therefore let us distrust the good providence for the time to come --

I think I shall go from this to Logan’s Port 45. M: from this & thence turn to South Bend - Thence home. - Don’t be anxious about me. Whatever betide I know it will be for the best - and this should quiet every fear.

Every day I pray for you & Dear dear Sarah: that God may have you both & always under his holy keeping

Mention me most kindly to all our dear Friends at Springfield. & believe me as always

Your faithful & affectionate

Uncle

P. Chase
