Description
A view of two secondary domes along the Dome of the Rock. These domes in their present form date from the Ottoman period, though they were originally erected as part of the original plan of Abd al-Malik along with the Dome of the Rock. They commemorate important parts of the Prophet’s Night Journey and Ascension (isra wa al-miraj). The smaller dome closer to the Dome of the Rock is the Qubbat al-Nabi, or Dome of the Prophet, which commemorates the spot where Muhammad lead the other prophets, messengers and angels in prayer before he ascended into the seven heavens. The larger dome farther away from the Dome of the Rock is called the Qubbat al-Miraj, or the Dome of Ascension.
