Abstract
View of the Roman Marketplace or Agora. The marketplace sat just outside the wall marking the Sanctuary of Apollo and sold votive offerings to pilgrims.
Description
View of the Stoa in the Roman Marketplace, or Agora. Situated just outside the Sanctuary of Apollo, this location was originally a Greek agora, before being extensively renovated by the Romans, who added the stoa, or covered portico pictured here. At the back of the Stoa, stalls would house vendors selling small votive offerings made from bronze or ceramic. The visible remains here date from the 4th century CE, and the columns seen in this image were re-erected in 1977, shortly before Baly's visit. Since, all of the surviving column capitals have been broken or removed. In the photo, we also see a series of statue bases and carved blocks (DH.24) between the columns and the stalls, all of which have been removed since.
