Description

Three gentlemen and a lady sit at a round table in the center of the room talking, drinking, and admiring a drawing. A dog lays in the foreground next to an open box, armchair, and footstool placed in front of an easel with an unfinished work. The walls of the room are decorated with the impressions of sculptures and vibrant curtains, with a large window on the right of the composition that looks out to a green, hilly landscape.

From The Third Tour of Doctor Syntax, In Search of a Wife by William Combe, illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson; published 1821, it is the final of three books written as comic poems satirizing William Gilpin and his promotion of the picturesque. These books have been digitized by The Public Domain Review, where a version of this print within The Third Tour can be seen on page 199.
